The 1st Quarter program combines caring adult coaches
with talented young players. As these students face
the game of their life, they need to define goals;
map out a plan; and build strength, skill, and intensity.
This program leads participants through the training
process and toward success - in the first quarter
of life and beyond!

The 1st Quarter Curriculum is available to connect
our youth with the people and resources they need.
By educating our children and equipping them with
the necessary skills and tools, we can gird them up
to face any challenge in life and win.
The 1st Quarter Curriculum is the combined work of
a number of individuals whose lives are dedicated
to our young people. The curriculum units and program
model originated from Tim Ware, retired NFL player,
who created the Fresh Start program. Michael Uden
of Concordia University Wisconsin revised the materials,
adding instructional strategies and resources.
Why is a game plan important?
In today's society, this is a question many of us
are trying to answer. Parent, teachers, legislators,
and the media continue to blame each other for the
troubles and despair of young people while the future
of the United States continues to fade away into hopelessness.
Who needs a game plan
for life?
Today's young people face educations, societal, and
moral challenges that did not exist a generation ago.
For them, the playing field of life is not a level
and predictable one. As they end their "first
quarter" and transition through the life-defining
stage of adolescence, the core values and life skills
necessary for success must be reinforced. That is
the reason for The 1st Quarter program.
What is the role of an
adult in this program?
Adults can often be found at athletic events, lining
the playing field in support of the young players.
The support, however, does not start there. For weeks
before the competition, coaches and others spend hours
with the young people in defining goals; mapping out
the game plan; and building strength, skill, and intensity
- both physically and mentally.
Sadly, today's adults have often neglected their
leadership and mentoring responsibilities in the real
lives of our youth, deciding instead to invest in
their own dreams and desire. Still, the model and
support that adults can offer young people is essential!
Our future depends on it.
